Seasonal Shipping 20 April 2026

Detty December 2026 Shipping Deadlines: Book Now to Guarantee Christmas Delivery in Nigeria

Detty December is Nigeria's biggest season — and if you want your gifts, gadgets, and goods to arrive in time, you need to book your cargo now. Sea freight for December delivery must leave the UK by mid-October at the latest. Here's everything you need to know.

If you have family in Nigeria, you already know what Detty December means. From late November through to the New Year, Nigeria comes alive with weddings, parties, reunions, and celebrations. Families gather across all 36 states. The diaspora travels home. And goods from the UK — electronics, clothing, food, cash substitutes, gifts — need to arrive on time to be part of it.

The problem? The shipping calendar doesn’t care about your good intentions in November. By the time most people think about booking their Detty December cargo, the sea freight window has already closed.

Why Detty December Is a Shipping Challenge

Demand for cargo space to Nigeria spikes dramatically from October through December. UK-based consolidators and freight forwarders fill up their containers quickly. Apapa port in Lagos — the main entry point for sea cargo — experiences severe congestion during this period, adding days or weeks to clearance times.

Every year, shipments booked in late November miss their target delivery window. Families in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and across the country wait for goods that arrive in January. It’s frustrating for everyone — and entirely avoidable.

The Deadlines You Need to Know

Sea Freight: Book by Mid-October 2026

Sea cargo from the UK to Nigeria takes 3–5 weeks from door to door. That includes:

  • Collection from your UK address
  • Consolidation at our London hub
  • Departure from a UK port
  • The sea leg (7–10 days sailing time)
  • Apapa customs clearance (1–2 weeks, longer during peak season)
  • Last-mile delivery to the Nigerian address

Working backwards from a Christmas delivery target, your cargo needs to leave the UK by mid-October at the latest. In practice, we recommend booking in September or early October to secure space and allow buffer time for Apapa congestion.

If your cargo leaves the UK in November, it will almost certainly arrive in January.

Air Freight: Book by Late November 2026

Air freight is faster — 3–7 working days from dispatch — but demand also peaks sharply in December. Air cargo capacity to Nigeria fills up in late November, and rates increase as the season peaks.

For air freight to arrive before Christmas, you need it dispatched from the UK by late November at the latest. Ideally, book in early to mid-November to get the best rates and guaranteed space.

Air freight is the right option for urgent, last-minute, or high-value items — phones, laptops, jewellery, documents — when the sea freight window has passed.

What to Send for Detty December

Electronics and Gadgets

Phones, laptops, tablets, headphones, and game consoles are among the most popular items sent from the UK. Nigerian electronics markets are well-stocked, but UK prices are often significantly lower, and specific models or brand preferences make UK-sourced electronics a popular gift choice.

Pack electronics carefully — original boxes, bubble wrap, anti-static bags — and consider our cargo insurance option for high-value items.

Fashion and Clothing

Detty December parties demand outfits. UK fashion brands like Primark, ASOS, Next, and designer labels are popular choices. Many families send multiple outfits per person — Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and the weddings and events in between.

Use vacuum bags for clothing in sea cargo to save space and protect against humidity.

Food and Grocery Items

Packaged and dried food items — cereals, condiments, flavourings, snacks, noodles, and tinned goods — are a staple of Detty December shipments. Many UK Nigerian families send food as part of a family barrel going to grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Check our prohibited items guide before packing food — frozen poultry and certain fresh products cannot be shipped.

Gifts and Household Items

Toys for children, kitchen appliances, bedding, and Christmas decorations are all common cargo items. If you’re heading home yourself in December, many people send their checked-luggage-equivalent goods by cargo ahead of their flight — cheaper and less stressful than airline excess baggage.

Cash Substitutes

Many UK Nigerians send gift cards, store vouchers, and high-value small items (watches, jewellery) rather than cash. These travel well in secure, declared packaging.

The Apapa Congestion Warning

Every year around December, Apapa port in Lagos becomes significantly congested. Vessels queue offshore. Containers sit in the terminal waiting for examination. Clearance that normally takes a week can stretch to two or three weeks.

This is not specific to Precebol — it affects the entire industry. The only way to beat it is to ship early. Cargo that arrives at Apapa in November will clear well before the congestion peaks. Cargo arriving in December is at the mercy of the port.

We notify recipients proactively and keep you updated throughout the process, but we cannot control port congestion. What we can do is help you time your shipment to avoid the worst of it.

Book Now — Don’t Leave It to October

It feels early. In April, Christmas seems distant. But September and October bookings for December delivery are normal in this industry, and the customers who book early are the ones whose families open their gifts before New Year.
