Prohibited and Restricted Items: What You Cannot Send to Nigeria from the UK
Not everything can go in your cargo box. Nigeria Customs enforces a clear list of prohibited and restricted goods, and getting it wrong can mean seizures, fines, or worse. This guide covers exactly what you cannot send — and what needs special permission.
Shipping goods from the UK to Nigeria is straightforward when everything is above board. But every year, shipments are delayed, seized, or destroyed because senders didn’t check the rules. Nigeria Customs (NCS) takes its prohibited items list seriously — and ignorance is not a defence.
This guide tells you exactly what you cannot send, what requires a permit, and how to handle borderline cases.
Fully Prohibited Items
These goods are banned outright. They cannot be shipped to Nigeria from the UK under any circumstances, regardless of quantity or purpose.
Weapons and Ammunition
Firearms, pistols, revolvers, rifles, and any weapon capable of discharging a projectile are banned. This includes imitation firearms that could be mistaken for real ones. Ammunition, gunpowder, and explosive devices of any kind are also prohibited.
Narcotics and Controlled Drugs
Any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance not authorised by the Nigerian government is banned. This includes recreational drugs, most controlled substances under UK law, and unprescribed opioids. Even items that are legal in the UK — like certain CBD products — may be banned in Nigeria.
Counterfeit Goods
Fake branded goods — counterfeit clothing, electronics, currency, perfumes, and accessories — are banned. Nigeria Customs actively looks for these, and the penalty is seizure and potential criminal charges at the Nigerian end.
Indecent Publications and Materials
Pornographic materials, obscene books, films, and any publication deemed indecent under Nigerian law are banned. This is broadly interpreted, so err on the side of caution.
Used Mattresses and Bedding
Used mattresses are banned from import into Nigeria. This applies whether they’re packed in a container or included in a personal effects shipment. New mattresses can be shipped with the right documentation.
Certain Food Items
Frozen poultry (chicken, turkey, duck) is banned from import. Certain live animals and animal products are also prohibited. If you’re sending food, check the specific item — and see the restricted section below.
Toxic Waste and Hazardous Chemicals
Industrial chemicals, toxic waste, and any substance that falls under international hazardous goods classifications are banned.
Restricted Items (Require Permits or Special Handling)
These goods can be shipped but only with the right documentation or within specific conditions.
Pharmaceuticals and Medicines
Prescription medicines, supplements, and pharmaceutical products require prior clearance from NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control). Sending medicines without NAFDAC registration documentation will result in seizure at customs. Personal quantities of prescription medicine (enough for personal use, with a prescription letter) are generally handled differently — speak to us before shipping.
Electronics and Electrical Goods
Certain electrical goods require SONCAP (Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme) certification before they can clear Nigerian customs. This includes televisions, generators, transformers, fridges, and cables. See our separate guide on SONCAP for the full list and how to get certified.
Used Vehicles
Vehicles more than 15 years old from the date of manufacture cannot be imported into Nigeria. If your car falls outside the allowed age, it will be turned back at the port. See our vehicle import guide for the current rules.
Plants and Plant Products
Importing plants and seeds requires a phytosanitary certificate from the country of origin. Without it, the goods will be held at the port.
Alcohol
There are import restrictions on alcohol, with duties and import licences required. Sending alcohol in personal cargo can cause clearance problems. Speak to us before including it in a shipment.
What Happens If Prohibited Items Are Found?
Nigeria Customs has the authority to seize goods outright, fine the importer, and in serious cases (weapons, drugs) refer the matter to law enforcement. At the UK end, HMRC and Border Force can also act if prohibited items are found during pre-departure checks.
The practical consequences for a cargo shipment:
- The prohibited item is removed and destroyed — you will not get it back
- The rest of the shipment may be held while customs investigate
- Clearance costs increase significantly — storage fees accumulate while the matter is resolved
- In serious cases, the entire shipment can be seized
This is why it matters. One banned item in a shared container can delay your entire consignment.
Borderline Items: What to Do
Sometimes you’re not sure. Is that herbal supplement okay? Can you send the airsoft gun? What about that second-hand electrical item?
The rule of thumb is: if you’re not sure, ask before you pack.
Common borderline situations we see:
- Herbal medicines and supplements — check if NAFDAC registration is required
- Power banks and lithium batteries — restricted on air freight, conditions apply on sea
- Second-hand goods — generally allowed but must be declared accurately; some categories (mattresses, bedding) are banned
- Food products — dried, packaged food is usually fine; fresh, frozen, or meat products are more complex
- Cash — there are limits on what can be declared; do not hide cash inside packages
