20ft vs 40ft Container Shipping UK to Nigeria: Costs, Uses & Which to Choose

Booking a container for shipping to Nigeria is a big decision. A 20ft FCL is the sweet spot for many businesses and large family shipments. A 40ft makes sense for full household moves and high-volume commercial loads. This guide breaks down the costs and helps you choose.

If you’re moving a large volume of goods from the UK to Nigeria — commercial stock, household goods, multiple vehicles, or a business relocation — you’re probably weighing up whether to book a full container (FCL) and whether 20ft or 40ft is the right size.

This guide gives you a clear, honest breakdown of both options so you can make the right call.

The Basics: What Is FCL?

FCL stands for Full Container Load. When you book FCL, you’re renting the entire container — no other customer’s goods share your space. This means:

  • The container is sealed with only your goods inside
  • You have full control over what’s packed and how
  • Customs clearance in Nigeria is based solely on your declaration
  • No risk of delays caused by other customers’ cargo

The alternative is LCL (Less than Container Load), where your goods share container space with other customers. LCL is what Precebol uses for most individual and smaller commercial shipments.

20ft Container: What It Holds and When to Use It

A standard 20ft shipping container (also called a TEU — Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) has:

  • Internal volume: approximately 33 cubic metres
  • Maximum payload: approximately 28,000kg
  • Typical use capacity: 10–15 tonnes of household goods

A 20ft container is the most commonly booked size for UK-Nigeria shipments. It suits:

  • A 3–4 bedroom household relocation to Nigeria
  • A sole trader or SME shipping a full stock load to Nigeria
  • Combined shipments — for example, one or two vehicles plus household goods and personal effects
  • Importers shipping electrical goods, clothing, or building materials at scale

If you’re regularly shipping to Nigeria and your monthly volume is approaching 15–25 cubic metres, booking a 20ft FCL often becomes cheaper than repeated LCL shipments.

40ft Container: What It Holds and When to Use It

A standard 40ft container has:

  • Internal volume: approximately 67 cubic metres — roughly double a 20ft
  • Maximum payload: approximately 30,000kg
  • Typical use capacity: full household move or very large commercial loads

A 40ft container suits:

  • A full 5+ bedroom household move from the UK to Nigeria
  • Businesses importing large commercial volumes — bulk goods, factory equipment, construction materials
  • Combining multiple vehicles (2–3 cars) with household goods in a single container
  • Freight consolidators booking on behalf of multiple customers

The jump in capacity from 20ft to 40ft is significant. Unless you genuinely have the volume to fill a 40ft, a 20ft is almost always the more economical choice.

Note: Freight is only one component. Nigerian import duties, destination inspection charges (NESS/SON), port handling, and inland delivery are assessed separately and vary based on contents and declared value.

FCL vs LCL: When Does FCL Become Worth It?

The rough rule of thumb: if your cargo is more than 15 cubic metres, FCL (20ft) typically becomes cheaper than LCL on a per-cubic-metre basis — and you get the added benefit of a sealed, sole-use container.

Below 15 cubic metres, LCL is usually more cost-effective because you only pay for the space you use.

What Else Affects Container Shipping Costs?

Origin port — Container freight from Felixstowe or Southampton may differ slightly from London ports. We will advise on the most cost-effective port for your departure.

Nigerian destination port — Lagos (Apapa or Tin Can Island) is the main arrival port. Shipping to Port Harcourt (Rivers State) is also possible for southeast Nigerian destinations. We will advise on the best port for your delivery address.

Contents — Commercial goods, especially electronics, attract Nigerian import duty assessed by Nigerian Customs. A pre-import declaration accurately describing contents is essential to avoid delays.

Timing — Seasonal surcharges apply at peak periods (pre-Christmas, Ramadan/Sallah). Booking 6–8 weeks ahead locks in current rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix personal effects and commercial goods in the same container? Yes, but the two categories need to be clearly separated within the container and declared separately on the manifest. Mixing personal effects and commercial goods without proper declaration is a common cause of customs problems.

How long does container shipping from the UK to Nigeria take? Sea transit from UK ports to Lagos is approximately 4–6 weeks. Door-to-door, including UK collection, port clearance in Lagos, and last-mile delivery, is typically 5–6 weeks.

Can I ship a car inside a container? Yes. Vehicles can be loaded into containers (especially 40ft) alongside other cargo. Vehicles must be left-hand drive (LHD) — UK right-hand drive cars cannot be legally registered in Nigeria.

What documentation do I need for a container shipment? A packing list, commercial invoice (for commercial goods), and the consignee’s details in Nigeria are the minimum. For commercial imports above certain values, a Form M is required. Our team prepares all UK-side export documentation.
