Sending a Document Courier from the UK to Nigeria: Cost, Speed and How to Track
Some documents are too important to trust to a standard postal service — and too time-sensitive to go by cargo. Precebol's document courier service gets original documents from the UK to Nigeria in 3-5 working days, with recipient notification and tracking.
Some things can’t be replaced. A Nigerian passport, an original university certificate, a court order, a Title Deed — if these are lost in transit, the consequences are serious and sometimes irreversible. Standard postal services to Nigeria are unreliable and slow. Major international couriers like DHL and FedEx work but can be expensive and sometimes struggle with Nigerian last-mile delivery.
Precebol’s document courier service is built specifically for the UK-Nigeria route — with local knowledge at the Nigerian end, door collection in the UK, and recipient notification before delivery.
What Documents People Send from the UK to Nigeria
Identity Documents
- Nigerian passports — particularly common for people who’ve renewed their passport through the Nigerian High Commission in London and need the old or new passport sent to family in Nigeria, or for Nigerians in the UK sending their documents home ahead of a visit
- Nigerian National Identity Cards — where the physical card needs to be sent back
- Birth certificates — UK-issued birth certificates for Nigerian-born parents, or Nigerian birth certificates brought to the UK for processing and returned
Immigration Documents
- UK visa confirmation letters for family members in Nigeria to attend UK visa appointments
- Biometric Residence Permits (BRP) — where a family member’s permit needs to return to Nigeria (seek legal advice on this before sending)
- Travel documents and supporting letters for visa applications
Legal and Financial Documents
- Court documents — court orders, affidavits, deposition notices, legal correspondence
- Power of Attorney documents — executed in the UK and needing to reach a Nigerian solicitor or beneficiary
- Property documents — Title Deeds, Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), property sale agreements
- Bank correspondence — account closure confirmations, reference letters, statements
Academic Documents
- University degrees and transcripts — original certificates from UK universities going to Nigerian employers or institutions
- Professional qualifications — CIMA, ACCA, CIPD, NMC pin letters, and other professional body certificates
- GCSE and A-level certificates — original exam certificates sometimes needed for Nigerian applications
- School results and reference letters
Government and Official Documents
- NIN (National Identification Number) slips — confirmation documents from NIMC
- CAC (Corporate Affairs Commission) documents — company registration papers needed in Nigeria
- NECO, WAEC, and JAMB result slips — sometimes sent by relatives in the UK who’ve facilitated applications
- Revenue documents — tax clearance certificates, FIRS correspondence
Why Specialist Courier Beats DHL and FedEx for This Route
International courier giants handle millions of packages. For Nigeria, the challenges are:
Last-mile delivery in Nigerian cities is complex. Addresses are not always standardised. Areas like Surulere, Agege, Mushin in Lagos, or residential estates in Abuja and Enugu have variable address formats. A global courier’s Nigerian sub-contractor may not have the local knowledge to find the right house on the right street.
Recipient notification is hit and miss. Large couriers may leave a notice and not return, or attempt delivery once and declare it undeliverable. We call ahead, confirm availability, and rebook if the recipient isn’t there.
Local knowledge matters for sensitive documents. For documents going to Nigerian government offices, legal chambers, or specific institutions, knowing the right way to deliver matters. Our Nigeria team is based in Ikeja, Lagos and coordinates deliveries locally.
Cost. For heavy document packs or multiple envelope shipments, Precebol’s document courier can be more cost-effective than major international couriers.
Transit Time
Our document courier service uses air freight from the UK, with an expected transit time of:
3–5 working days from dispatch to delivery in Nigeria
This covers:
- Dispatch from the UK (same-day if received before 10am, next working day otherwise)
- Air transit to Lagos (typically overnight or 24 hours)
- Lagos clearance for documents (usually 24–48 hours)
- Last-mile delivery to the Nigerian address
For Lagos addresses, delivery is typically at the faster end of this range. For inland cities (Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Enugu), allow the full 5 working days or slightly more.
Same-Day Dispatch Option
For genuinely urgent documents, we offer same-day dispatch if we receive your documents before 10am on a working day. This gets your documents moving immediately rather than waiting until the following day’s consignment.
This is particularly useful for time-sensitive legal matters, passport returns, or any situation where a day’s delay creates a problem.
The Tracking Process
Once your documents are dispatched, we provide:
- A shipment reference number — allows you to query status at any time by calling us
- Milestone updates — we notify you when documents have departed the UK and when they’ve arrived in Lagos
- Pre-delivery call — our Nigeria team calls the recipient before delivery to confirm address and availability
- Delivery confirmation — we notify you when the documents have been successfully delivered
For very high-value or sensitive documents, we can arrange signature on delivery.
Insurance for Original and Irreplaceable Documents
Original documents that cannot be replaced — certain property deeds, one-off legal papers, original certificates — should always be insured for the cost of replacement or the cost of the consequences of loss.
We offer document courier insurance as an add-on. For most document shipments, the cost is modest. For irreplaceable documents, it’s worth it.
If you’re sending a document that has a known replacement cost (e.g., £150 for a replacement certificate), insure for at least that amount. If the document has no replacement (certain executed legal documents), discuss the appropriate coverage with us.
Collection Available Across the UK
You can:
- Book a collection from your UK address — we come to you
- Drop off at our London hub (52 Camberwell Church St, SE5 8QZ) during business hours
- Post your documents to our London hub using tracked Royal Mail service (for non-urgent, non-irreplaceable documents only)
For valuable original documents, we recommend collection or drop-off rather than posting.
How to Prepare Your Documents for Courier
- Use a padded envelope or document wallet — protects the contents during handling
- Do not fold official documents — use a rigid-backed envelope or a document folder
- Label the outside clearly — recipient’s full name, Nigerian address, phone number, and your contact details
- Include a brief note describing the contents for customs purposes (e.g., “personal documents — university certificate”)
- Declare accurately — document couriers still go through customs. “Documents” is sufficient as a description for most personal papers.
