Why Air Freight Is Priced on Chargeable Weight

The single biggest surprise for first-time shippers is the air freight bill. You weigh your box at 12kg, but the quote comes back priced for 20kg. Why? Because airlines and freight forwarders charge on chargeable weight — the greater of your shipment's actual weight and its volumetric weight. A light, bulky box takes up space a heavier box of the same price would, so it is priced on the space it occupies.

Actual Weight

What the package weighs on the scales, in kilograms. Simple.

Volumetric Weight

Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 6000. This converts the box's size into a weight figure.

The Air Freight Formula

Volumetric weight = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 6000

Chargeable weight = the GREATER of actual and volumetric

Sea Cargo Is Different — It's Priced by Volume

Sea cargo on a shared container (LCL) is priced by the space your goods occupy, measured in cubic feet. Weight barely matters for sea — you can ship a heavy barrel cheaply by sea but pay a premium for it by air. Precebol charges from £18 per cubic foot with a minimum charge. As a rule of thumb, a standard 45–55 gallon barrel is about 3 cubic feet.

Cubic feet = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 28,317

Sea cost = cubic feet × £18 (minimum charge applies)

Common Questions

What is chargeable weight for air freight to Nigeria?
Chargeable weight is the figure air freight is actually priced on — it is the greater of your shipment’s actual weight and its volumetric (dimensional) weight. Volumetric weight is calculated from the size of the box: length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 6000. If your shipment is light but bulky, the volumetric weight will be higher and that is what you pay on. A 30kg box that measures large can have a chargeable weight of 45kg or more.
How do I calculate volumetric weight for air cargo?
Multiply the length, width and height of your package in centimetres, then divide by 6000. For example, a box of 60cm × 40cm × 40cm = 96,000 cm³ ÷ 6000 = 16kg volumetric weight. If the box only weighs 10kg on the scales, you are still charged for 16kg because the chargeable weight is the higher of the two.
How is sea cargo to Nigeria measured and priced?
Sea cargo on a shared (LCL) container is priced by volume, not weight. We measure the cubic feet your goods occupy — length × width × height in centimetres divided by 28,317 gives cubic feet. Precebol charges from £18 per cubic foot, with a minimum charge. A standard barrel is roughly 3 cubic feet. Sea is far cheaper than air for heavy or bulky items.
Is the calculator price a final quote?
No — it is an indicative estimate to help you budget. Your final price depends on exact weight and dimensions at packing, the destination state in Nigeria, whether you want door delivery, and the goods themselves. Send us your measurements and we return a full itemised quote within 2 business hours, with no obligation.
