Sallah Shipping Guide: Sending Gifts to Northern Nigeria Before Eid
Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha are the two most significant celebrations in northern Nigeria — Sallah season, when families gather, new clothes are worn, and gifts from the UK are especially meaningful. Here's how to make sure yours arrives in time.
For UK Nigerians with family in the north, Sallah season is one of the most important times of year to send a package. Eid ul-Fitr (marking the end of Ramadan) and Eid ul-Adha (Sallah proper, the Feast of the Sacrifice) are celebrated with new clothes, feasts, family visits, and the exchange of gifts. A package arriving from London before Eid carries genuine meaning.
Getting it there in time requires planning — particularly for northern states, where delivery from Lagos involves additional road transit.
Understanding Sallah in Northern Nigeria
Northern Nigeria has a predominantly Muslim population across its many states. Eid celebrations here are large-scale social events — not just religious observances but community-wide festivals lasting several days.
Key northern states for Precebol deliveries:
- North-West: Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa
- North-East: Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe
- North-Central (partly Muslim): Plateau, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa
Each of these states is within our delivery network. Cargo clears Apapa in Lagos and is transported inland by road — Kano, for example, is approximately 1,100km from Lagos, a journey of 12–18 hours by road freight.
2026 Eid Dates and Booking Deadlines
Eid dates are determined by the lunar calendar and confirmed by moon sighting, so exact dates can shift by a day or two. Approximate 2026 dates based on the Islamic calendar:
Eid ul-Fitr 2026 (end of Ramadan): Approximately late March / early April 2026
Eid ul-Adha 2026 (Sallah): Approximately early June 2026
Sea Freight Deadlines
For Eid ul-Fitr (March/April arrival): sea cargo should leave the UK by late January at the latest. For most people, this means booking in early January.
For Eid ul-Adha (June arrival): sea cargo should leave the UK by late March / early April. Book in February or March.
For northern states, add an extra 3–5 days onto the Lagos clearance time to account for inland road transport. Book earlier to create buffer.
Air Freight Deadlines
For Eid ul-Fitr: book air freight by mid-March. For Eid ul-Adha: book air freight by mid-May.
Air freight is the right choice if you’ve missed the sea window, for high-value items, or for smaller parcels where air cost is proportionate.
What to Send for Sallah
Clothing (Aso-Oke, Agbada, Kaftan)
New clothes for Eid are almost universal. In northern Nigeria, traditional attire — kaftans, agbada, babariga, hijabs — is the norm for Eid celebrations. Many UK Nigerians purchase fabric or ready-made traditional garments in the UK and ship them home.
Children’s outfits are particularly popular. A new outfit from London for the children is a thoughtful gift that will be remembered and photographed.
Perfume and Attar
Fragrance is deeply embedded in Eid traditions in northern Nigeria. Attar (non-alcoholic perfume oil) and Western fragrance brands are both popular gifts. Pack perfume carefully — sealed in a zip-lock bag inside bubble wrap, well cushioned in the box, and declared accurately on the packing list.
Prayer Items
Prayer mats, tasbeeh (prayer beads), Islamic books, and Qurans are appropriate and appreciated gifts. These travel well by sea or air and are not subject to any special import restrictions.
Food Items
Dates, nuts, and certain packaged food items are popular for Eid. Check our prohibited items guide before including food — fresh and perishable items cannot be shipped, but dried and packaged goods travel well.
Electronics and Household Goods
Phones, tablets, and household appliances are year-round popular gifts that gain extra significance when timed to arrive for Eid. If you’re sending electronics, be aware of SONCAP requirements for certain items.
Delivery Timing During Ramadan
An important practical note: during Ramadan itself (the month preceding Eid ul-Fitr), logistics operations in northern Nigeria operate at reduced capacity in some areas. Offices may have reduced hours, and road freight teams often work shorter days to accommodate fasting.
If your cargo is in transit during Ramadan, allow a few extra days for last-mile delivery in northern states. We factor this into our planning and advise accordingly when you book.
Delivery to Specific Northern States
We deliver to all of Nigeria’s 36 states, including all northern states. Some practical details on key locations:
Kano — Nigeria’s second largest city and the commercial capital of the north. Good road access from Lagos. Delivery typically 2–4 days after Lagos clearance.
Kaduna — Major northern city, well-connected by road. Delivery 2–3 days after Lagos clearance.
Sokoto — Northwest of Kano, additional 3–4 hours from Kano by road. Delivery 3–5 days after Lagos clearance.
Maiduguri (Borno State) — Northeast Nigeria, one of the longer inland delivery routes. Delivery 4–7 days after Lagos clearance.
