Back-to-School Shipping to Nigeria: Sending University Supplies from the UK
Nigerian universities start a new academic year in September, and a second semester in January. Parents in the UK send laptops, phones, school supplies, food, and bedding for their students ahead of these dates. Here's how to get it there in time.
Supporting a child through university in Nigeria from a base in the UK is a real logistical challenge. You can’t easily drop things off. A package sent by standard international courier is expensive for anything heavy. And the things your son or daughter needs — a laptop, school shoes, a box of food, bedding — aren’t small.
This is where sea and air cargo from the UK to Nigeria becomes genuinely useful. Many UK parents send a shipment ahead of their student’s new academic year, and we help hundreds of families do this every year.
When Nigerian Students Need Goods from the UK
August–September: The Main Academic Intake
Nigerian universities typically start their first semester in September or October. Students starting a new year, returning after the long break, or beginning their first year at university all need supplies in place before lectures begin.
For sea cargo to arrive by late September:
- Book by late July to ensure the goods leave the UK in early August
- Sea transit takes 4–6 weeks door to door
- Allow extra time if the destination is an inland city (Zaria, Ile-Ife, Benin City, Owerri)
For air freight to arrive by late September:
- Book by early September — air takes 3–7 working days
January: Second Semester
Nigerian universities’ second semester typically starts in late January or February. Students returning after the Christmas break, or new students joining mid-year, need supplies in place.
For sea cargo to arrive by late January:
- Book in November — before the Detty December rush clogs up capacity
- This is also one of the cheaper periods to ship before peak season pricing
For air freight second semester:
- Book in early January — enough buffer for 3–7 day transit
What Parents Send
Laptops and Tablets
A laptop is one of the most important things a university student in Nigeria can have. Many UK parents buy a laptop here — particularly during seasonal sales like Black Friday — and ship it by air to be sure it arrives safely and quickly. Air freight for a laptop makes sense given the value, the urgency, and the relatively low weight.
Buy in the original box. Ship in the original box, double-packed. See our electronics packing guide for details.
Phones and Accessories
A smartphone is essential for student life. UK SIM-unlocked phones often offer better specifications and UK prices, and many parents upgrade their student’s phone before the new academic year. Air freight is recommended for phones given the value-to-weight ratio.
School Shoes and Uniform
Nigerian universities still maintain dress codes in many faculties, and secondary school leavers starting university need appropriate footwear and clothing. Shoes are heavy and bulky — sea cargo is cost-effective for clothing and shoes.
Pack shoes in their original boxes if available. Place them at the bottom of the sea cargo box (heavier items at the bottom) and pack clothing on top.
Stationery
Notebooks, pens, highlighters, organisers, and revision materials are all practical and affordable in the UK. A stationery set from WH Smith or a quality notebook from Ryman isn’t expensive here but can be a meaningful gift for a student in Nigeria.
Food and Grocery Items
Students living in campus accommodation or rented rooms in Nigerian university towns appreciate food from home. Popular items include: cereal, Milo or Horlicks, condiments, noodles, biscuits, and food brands that aren’t easily available locally.
Pack food items in sealed airtight bags or containers, in a separate box from electronics and clothing. Label clearly.
Bedding and Household Items
Students in self-catered accommodation or off-campus housing often need bedding, kitchen items, and home comforts. Sea cargo is the right choice for these bulky, lower-value items. Vacuum bags are excellent for bedding — they compress significantly and protect against moisture on the sea voyage.

These are the universities and cities we most frequently deliver to for academic season shipments:

| University of Lagos (UNILAG) | Lagos | Lagos |
| Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) | Ile-Ife | Osun |
| Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) | Zaria | Kaduna |
| University of Benin (UNIBEN) | Benin City | Edo |
| Imo State University (IMSU) | Owerri | Imo |
| University of Nigeria (UNN) | Nsukka | Enugu |
| University of Ibadan (UI) | Ibadan | Oyo |
| Covenant University | Ota | Ogun |
| Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) | Awka | Anambra |
| University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) | Port Harcourt | Rivers |
We deliver to all of these cities and their surrounding areas.
Air vs Sea for Academic Season Shipments
| Item | Recommended Method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop / tablet | Air | High value, time-sensitive, relatively light |
| Smartphone | Air | High value, very light |
| Clothing and shoes | Sea | Heavy, lower value — sea is cost-effective |
| Food items | Sea | Heavy, bulky — sea is cost-effective |
| Bedding | Sea | Bulky but light — vacuum bag + sea is ideal |
| Stationery | Sea (or air with other items) | Low value, not urgent |
The practical approach for many parents: send the laptop and phone by air in early September (or January), and send the clothes, food, and household goods by sea on an earlier booking.
Cost Tips for Parents
Book early — sea freight for September arrival needs to leave the UK in late July. Early bookings avoid peak season surcharges.
Use vacuum bags for clothing and bedding — they reduce volume and therefore cost, especially for sea cargo priced by CBM.
Combine siblings’ shipments — if you have more than one child at university, or a family member receiving goods, combine into one booking to reduce handling costs.
Air for the essentials, sea for the bulk — a mixed approach often gives the best value.
