Sending Easter Gifts from the UK to Nigeria: Shipping Deadlines and What to Send

Easter is a major celebration across Nigeria's Christian communities — family gatherings, church services, and the exchange of gifts. If you want your package to arrive from the UK in time, the sea freight window opens and closes earlier than most people expect.

Easter carries real significance for millions of Nigerian families. Across the south-east, south-west, and parts of the Middle Belt, Easter weekend is a time for church, family gatherings, shared meals, and gifts — particularly for children. It’s one of the occasions where families expect to receive something from relatives abroad, and the pressure to deliver (literally) is real.

The challenge, as with all seasonal shipping, is timing. Easter 2026 falls in early April. By the time you’re reading this and thinking about gifts, the sea freight window for April delivery may already have passed. Here’s what you need to know for this year and future years.

Easter in Nigeria: Why It Matters

Easter in Nigeria is not just a religious observance — it’s a social event. Families travel between states for the weekend. Mothers cook for extended families. Children expect new clothes, shoes, and gifts. In many communities, particularly in Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Delta, Rivers, and Lagos, Easter is second only to Christmas in terms of festive intensity.

For the diaspora in the UK, sending a package for Easter is a way of being present even when you can’t travel. A parcel arriving from London with new clothes for the children, food items, and perhaps some electronics carries genuine emotional weight.

The Shipping Deadlines

Sea Cargo: Book by Late January / Early February

With a total door-to-door transit time of 3–5 weeks under normal conditions, sea cargo bound for an early April Easter arrival needs to leave the UK no later than late February — which means booking in late January or early February to ensure your goods are ready to go.

If Easter falls in the first or second week of April:

  • Ideal booking date: mid-to-late January
  • Latest viable departure from UK: last week of February
  • Allow extra time if your destination is inland (Enugu, Owerri, Asaba, Abeokuta — add 3–5 days to Lagos clearance time)

The honest reality: if you’re reading this in March and haven’t booked sea cargo yet, it’s almost certainly too late for Easter arrival. Switch to air freight.

Air Freight: Book by Mid-March

Air freight from the UK to Nigeria takes 3–7 working days. For early-April Easter delivery, you have until mid-to-late March to book and dispatch by air. This gives you comfortable buffer — but don’t leave it to the last week of March, as air cargo space fills up close to peak holidays.

Air freight is the right option if you’ve missed the sea window, if you’re sending a small parcel, or if the items are high-value (electronics, jewellery) that you’d prefer to arrive quickly.

What to Send for Easter

Clothing and Shoes

New clothes for Easter Sunday is a long-standing tradition in many Nigerian communities. Aso-ebi fabric for church, children’s outfits, school shoes, and smart clothing for adults are all popular Easter cargo items.

UK clothing is often good quality and better priced than equivalent Nigerian retail — Primark, Next, Marks & Spencer, and sportswear brands like Nike and Adidas are common choices. Pack clothing in vacuum bags for sea cargo to save space and protect against humidity.

Food and Grocery Items

Packaged and dried food items travel well and are always appreciated. Cereals, condiments, snacks, noodles, and flavourings are staple cargo items at Easter. Nigerian families in the UK often know exactly what their parents or grandparents prefer from the UK.

For sea cargo, pack food items in sealed, airtight containers inside robust cardboard boxes. Label the contents clearly on your packing list.

Children’s Gifts

Toys, stationery sets, books, craft kits, and small electronic devices (tablets, handheld games) are popular children’s Easter gifts. Children’s items are especially meaningful when sent from a UK aunt, uncle, or grandparent — it’s the thought that counts, and the Lagos postmark that proves it.

Easter Hampers

Some customers put together full Easter hampers — a box containing chocolates, biscuits, non-alcoholic wine, condiments, and household items. These travel well as sea cargo and make for a memorable delivery. Pack them in a solid outer box with good padding around individual items.
