Moving to Nigeria from the UK: How to Ship Your Belongings Home
Relocating from the UK to Nigeria after years of building a life here means deciding what to do with everything you've accumulated. This guide covers how household removals to Nigeria work — from Transfer of Residence customs relief to sea cargo timelines and last-mile delivery.
Returning to Nigeria after years in the UK is a significant decision. And it raises an immediate practical question: what do you do with everything you’ve accumulated — the furniture, the appliances, the clothing, the children’s things, the kitchen kit, the books, the car?
Selling everything is often a loss. Shipping it home is often more affordable than you think — especially if you understand the Transfer of Residence customs relief available to returning Nigerian residents. This guide walks through everything you need to know.

Transfer of Residence (ToR) Relief: What It Is and How to Use It
This is the most important thing returning Nigerians need to know about shipping a household to Nigeria.
Nigeria allows citizens and residents who are returning home after a period abroad to import their personal and household effects with reduced or zero customs duty under what is commonly called Transfer of Residence (ToR) or Change of Residence relief.
In practice, this means that instead of paying standard Nigerian import duty on a container full of furniture and appliances — which could be substantial — a qualifying returning resident pays significantly less, sometimes nothing, on items that are genuinely personal/household use.
Key conditions for ToR relief:
- Items must be owned and used by the returning resident prior to departure from the UK — not newly purchased goods being imported commercially
- The applicant must have been resident outside Nigeria for a qualifying period (this threshold has varied; our clearing agents advise on the current requirement)
- A sworn declaration and supporting documentation are typically required
- The consignment must arrive within a reasonable window of the applicant’s own return to Nigeria
What documentation is typically needed:
- Copy of your Nigerian passport (and UK visa/residency documentation showing period of stay)
- Utility bills or evidence of UK residence
- Inventory of household goods being shipped
- Statutory declaration or sworn affidavit
Our Lagos clearing agents are experienced with ToR applications. We advise customers on the documentation needed from the UK side, and our Lagos team facilitates the ToR application at the port. Correct use of ToR relief can save significantly on a full household removal.
Sea Cargo: The Only Viable Method for Household Removals
Air freight is not practical for furniture, appliances, or large volumes of household goods. The cost is prohibitive. Sea cargo is the standard and only economical method for a household removal.
How sea cargo works for a full household removal:
Your goods are packed, collected from your UK address, and consolidated at our South London warehouse. We book space in a container — either a dedicated container if the volume justifies it, or shared container space (LCL — Less than Container Load) if not. The container ships from a UK port to Lagos.
Transit time: approximately 4–6 weeks from UK port to Lagos. Door-to-door, including Nigerian port clearance and delivery to your address in Nigeria, is typically 6–8 weeks from UK collection.
FCL or LCL? For most 2–3 bedroom household removals, a 20ft container (FCL — Full Container Load) is appropriate. Larger households may need a 40ft. Smaller removals — a one-bedroom flat or a room of belongings — may be more economical as LCL (sharing container space with other customers’ cargo). We quote both options upfront.
How the Removal Process Works, Step by Step
Step 1 — Get a quote. Contact us with a rough inventory — how many rooms, what large furniture pieces, any appliances. We give you a volume estimate and quote for sea freight, customs, and delivery.
Step 2 — Confirm booking and start packing. We advise on packing. You can pack your own goods or we can arrange professional packing assistance.
Step 3 — Collection from your UK address. We collect from your property — one collection, or multiple pickups as you vacate over weeks. If you need staged collection, our warehousing service holds everything until you are ready to ship as a single consignment.
Step 4 — UK export documentation. We prepare the export declaration and packing list. For ToR applications, we coordinate the paperwork on the UK side.
Step 5 — Sea freight to Lagos. Your container or LCL consignment sails from the UK. You receive a booking reference and shipment updates.
Step 6 — Lagos port clearance. Our Lagos agents handle the full customs clearance — including ToR applications where applicable. You do not need to be present at the port.
Step 7 — Last-mile delivery to your Nigerian address. Our Lagos team delivers to your new home. We cover all 36 Nigerian states — Lagos delivery is typically 24–48 hours after port clearance; deliveries to northern states typically 4–7 days.
Using Our Warehouse for Staged Relocations
Relocations rarely happen in a single day. You may be vacating a UK property over several weeks, receiving goods from a storage unit, or shipping from multiple locations (your flat, a family member’s house).
Our South London warehouse (Camberwell, SE5) accepts staged deliveries. We log and hold each consignment until you are ready to ship everything as one. This is almost always more economical than multiple small shipments.
How Much Does a UK-to-Nigeria Household Removal Cost?
Costs vary significantly depending on volume, origin city, and Nigerian destination state. As a rough guide:
- LCL (shared container) for a small removal — from approximately £350–£700 depending on volume, including freight, port clearance, and Lagos delivery
- 20ft FCL (full container) — from approximately £1,100 for freight alone; port charges, customs clearance, and inland Nigeria delivery are additional
- 40ft FCL — from approximately £1,800 for freight; other charges additional
These are freight costs. All-inclusive quotes (including UK collection, sea freight, Nigerian port charges, clearance, and delivery to your Nigerian address) are provided upfront before you commit. Call us with your inventory for an accurate quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I book my household removal? As early as possible. Sea cargo takes 6–8 weeks door-to-door. If you are returning to Nigeria in June, booking in March or early April gives enough time to organise, pack, collect, and have your goods arrive around or shortly after you do.
Can I ship appliances that run on 240V UK voltage? Yes. UK appliances are 230–240V, as is Nigeria (officially 220–240V, though supply quality varies). Most modern appliances work fine. Older appliances may need voltage stabilisers in Nigeria. This is worth researching for specific items before shipping.
Can I ship my car as part of the same removal? Vehicles are shipped separately using our Automobile Shipment service. The timing can be coordinated so both arrive around the same time. We advise on how to align vehicle and household consignment schedules.
What happens if goods are damaged? All Precebol shipments include cargo insurance. If goods are damaged in transit, we handle the claim. Proper packing is critical — we advise on packing standards for heavy items like appliances and furniture.
Do I need to be in Nigeria to receive the delivery? No. Our Lagos team coordinates delivery with whoever is at the receiving address — a family member, a caretaker, a letting agent. You do not need to be physically present.
