Air Waybill (AWB) Explained for Nigeria Cargo

The Air Waybill is the contract and tracking document behind every air freight shipment to Nigeria. Here is what it is, how the number works, and why it is not the same as a Bill of Lading.

When you send cargo to Nigeria by air, the key document is the Air Waybill — usually written AWB. It is the air-freight equivalent of the sea-freight Bill of Lading, but with one crucial difference that catches people out. Here is what you need to know.

What is an Air Waybill?

An Air Waybill is the document issued when goods are accepted for air transport. It serves as:

  1. A receipt for the goods from the carrier
  2. A contract of carriage setting the terms of transport
  3. A tracking reference — the AWB number follows the shipment through the air network

Every air shipment has a unique AWB number, and it is what you use to track your cargo from the UK to Nigeria.

The crucial difference from a Bill of Lading

This is the part that matters: an Air Waybill is not a document of title.

Unlike a sea Bill of Lading — where whoever holds the original controls the goods — an Air Waybill is non-negotiable. The goods are released to the named consignee on the AWB once they prove their identity. You cannot “sign over” an Air Waybill to transfer ownership the way you can with a negotiable Bill of Lading.

In practice, this makes air freight simpler: there is no original document that has to physically travel to Nigeria before the goods can be collected. The named recipient just needs to identify themselves.

How to read an AWB number

An Air Waybill number has a standard format: an 11-digit number made up of:

  • The first 3 digits — the airline prefix (identifying the carrier)
  • The next 8 digits — the serial number (the last digit is a check digit)

For example, a number like 123-45678901. You enter this number into the carrier’s or forwarder’s tracking system to follow your shipment.

There are two levels you may encounter:

  • Master Air Waybill (MAWB) — issued by the airline to the freight forwarder, covering the consolidated shipment.
  • House Air Waybill (HAWB) — issued by the forwarder to the individual customer, covering your specific cargo within the consolidation.

If you ship with a forwarder like Precebol, you will usually deal with the House Air Waybill for your goods.

What information is on it?

  • Shipper and consignee details
  • Description of goods — pieces, weight, and dimensions
  • Chargeable weight — the figure your freight is priced on (see our chargeable weight calculator)
  • Airports of departure and destination (usually London to Lagos)
  • Charges and freight terms
  • Handling information and any special instructions

As with sea freight, the details must match your invoice and packing list, or clearance can be delayed.

Why it matters for your Nigeria shipment

The Air Waybill is the backbone of your air shipment: it is how the cargo is tracked, how duty is assessed at the Nigerian end, and how your recipient takes delivery. For commercial goods, it sits alongside your Form M, commercial invoice, and packing list in the clearance process.

For personal shipments, the AWB mostly works quietly in the background — but it is what lets you (and us) tell you exactly where your goods are.

How Precebol handles it

We issue and manage the Air Waybill for you, check that the consignee and contents details are correct, and give you the number so you can track the shipment. Our Lagos team uses it to coordinate clearance and delivery at the other end.
